Forever Young – On Water Salute in Memory of a Design Legend

Event information

This event has passed.

Jim Young designed and built a vast array of yachts and launches including one of his favourite and most successful designs the Young 88.

The life of Jim is being honoured at a remembrance ceremony at the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron Friday, July 3rd at 2pm.

There has been a big expression of loss, a lot of stories of the fun and joy his designs have brought and a real desire from those who own or have owned his designs to mark his passing.

We want to bring together as many of his designs as possible for an on water lap in his honour including keelers, launches, catamarans and dinghies.

The “Young flotilla” will assemble after the remembrance ceremony at approximately 3:15pm on the waters directly in front of the Squadron.
Boats will join an anticlockwise circuit leaving the red lateral mark immediately in front of the club to port and extending East along the seawall leaving an inflatable laid mark to port to return to once again leave the red lateral mark to port.

It is anticipated that we will circuit for max 15 minutes to allow time for those rum racing to prepare and rest to clear the area before the rum race starts.

Be aware that there is not a lot of water South of the red lateral mark so watch your depth and do not stray too close to the sea wall.

Skippers to listen out on VHF Channel 17 for any further instructions.
