Auckland Young 88s Taking The Measure in 2020

Published Sun 02 Feb 2020

Yesterday six boats and eight committee & crew volunteer measurers lined up for the annual Westhaven weighing/measuring session.  Any boat that has recently changed hands, had a structural or major component change (eg new engine)  gets asked to report  for a “check-up”.  Owners whose boats have not been weighed for years are also asked to come along.

The goal of the Owner’s Association is to ensure that the boats are as close as possible/practical to one design. The measurer’s strategy for the last few years has  been to keep an overall eye on boats choosing to focus on areas where there may be some inconsistency and working to bring those into alignment.  Current focus is overall weight and rudder compliance.

It was a big job ensuring all boats were properly emptied (per the class rules)  and that measurements were made quickly, accurately and efficiently.

Big vote of thanks to the volunteers (especially our Class Measurer Chris Macindoe) who all gave up what would have been a beautiful sailing day.  Thanks also to the owners for coming along, emptying their boats and waiting patiently while we did our thing.

We found a couple of issues; however overall compliance was excellent.

The volunteer  team was both complimented and criticised for the thoroughness and attention to detail which probably means that we got it about right.

Now back to the sailing!
