Hi all,
Hopefully work is done, Xmas shopping finished, and boat packed ready for a long hot summer of cruising.
Don't forget to do you pre-holiday service and safety checks, make sure the tiller head bolt is tight, lifeline lashings secure, and stanchions not cracked around the elbow at the bottom. Failure of any one of those things is embarrassing at best!
2022 was certainly another good year for practicing resilience skills! 2023 does not look like a moderate breeze broad reach either but we have plenty of cool stuff planned.
First up is Bay of Islands Sailing Week Jan 24-27. If you are still sitting on the dock on this one we recommend you hop on board because it is great fun.
The girls from Rascal Tom are leading the Club 88 cocktail party and they are dangerous!
The next weigh and measure session in Auckland is Feb 18th and with Pier 21 gone we will be heading round the corner to the friendly blokes and blokettes at Half Moon Bay.
We have invited all those that we think are due for a check. If you haven't received an invite and want one then please get in touch
The endless Southern summer starts with the inaugural Southern Owners Champs Feb 25-26th.
Get in contact with Phil for more info on that one.
We had We planned to run the relaunched Auckland Champs for the magnificent Kava Bowl trophy in conjunction with the Auckland Regatta.
Unfortunately, that has been moved to the depths of winter in June and the feedback from the fleet is to stay with a summer regatta but make it one day only and keep the event as a warmup for those doing the Nationals in March.
We are now aiming to run the 2023 Young 88 Auckland Regatta on Feb 26th with RNZYS as organising authority. We currently have firm expressions of interest from 17 boats for this event
For the full 2023 list of events including hanging with the Canterbury 88s at Sail GP, the Nationals on March 25-26 and much more keep an eye on the Young 88 calendars at this link.
Reminder, we still also have four keen crews looking for charters to do the nationals so if you are not sailing then why not reach an agreement that works for both parties and let someone else have a go? Please contact me if you want to discuss.
There are many other initiatives in play, but we'll leave that for the next update.
Thanks to the hard-working committee for giving their time to the class and to you the members for getting out there, having fun and keeping the profile of the class as high as ever.
Merry Christmas and a Cruisey New Year
Regards
Mike
